The incense scent of Meditation is an invitation to an inner journey during which the fumes of Oliban and Styrax join the ancient skies of the East and the rituals of the first centuries.
One night, in a monastery in the middle of the Egyptian desert, Thaïs gives up her futile and dissolute life to embrace a new destiny. The sacred and protective resins mingle with the incense of Egypt and spread their messenger perfumes around the priestess of Venus and the monk Athanael in a mystical exaltation.
Profane or sacred, it is on the road of incense that the feelings of glowing hearts travel.
The Méditation is an instrumental entr'acte performed between the scenes of Act II in the opera Thaïs. In the second scene of Act II, following the Méditation, Thaïs tells Athanaël that she will follow him to the desert.
Thaïs is an opera by Jules Massenet to a French libretto by Louis Gallet, based on the novel Thaïs by Anatole France. It was first performed at the Opéra Garnier in Paris on 16 March 1894
